Congresswoman Pingree Complains About Continued Spending on Iraq, Afghanistan
05/28/2010 10:56 AM ET

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree says, while there is much in the National National Defense Authorization Act she supports, there are other provisions that she strongly disagrees with.

Speaking today on the House floor the first district Democrat says she's extremely disappointed the bill contains an additional thirty-three billion dollars for the surge in Afghanistan and 159 billion most of which Pingree says will be spent in Afghanistan and Iraq.

"We are pursuing a misguided strategy at a tremendous cost to the american people," said Pingree. "The loss of one more american service man or woman is simply too high a cost for a mission that does not strengthen economy."

Pingree again spoke out against funding including in the measure that would provide half a billion dollars for an alternative F-35 fighter engine that she says isn't needed and the Pentago doesn't want. Parts for the current Joint Strike figher engine are manufactured at the Pratt and Whitney Plant in North Berwick.
