Pat Gallant-Charette, 60, made it across the 20-mile stretch today on her third attempt.

The third time's the charm for a Westbook woman, who has finally realized her dream of swimming across the English Channel. Pat Gallant-Charette, 60, succeeded today on her third attempt to swim the 20-mile distance.

According an entry posted at 3:14 p.m. today on her blog, www.patgalant.blogspot.com/, Gallant-Charette completed the swim after battling strong currents at the end.

"SHE DID IT!, OMG, she did it!" the entry reads.

The Westbrook grandmother first attempted the grueling swim in 2008, but ended the effort about a mile-and-a-half from the finish after getting stalled in currents for four hours.

On her second attempt, the event was canceled by organizers due to weather conditions.

Gallant-Charette is now the new holder of the record as the oldest American woman to swim the English Channel, according to The Associated Press.
