McConnell Pays Tribute to Retiring Sen. Snowe
12/12/2012 12:06 PM ET

The Republican U.S. Senate leader praised the retiring Maine senator, describing her advocacy for Mainers as "ferocious."

"Tenacity and tough-mindedness." Those are two of the words U.S. Senate Leader Mitch McConnell used to describe Maine Sen. Olympia Snowe during a tribute this morning on the Senate floor.

"It's been an honor to work alongside this remarkable woman for the past 18 years, and to see up close her tenacity and tough-mindedness in the service of her constituents. Some have described Sen. Snowe's advocacy for Mainers as ferocious," the Republican leader said.

McConnell said saying goodbye to the retiring senator was "difficult."

"A lot of people like to focus on Olympia's independent streak," he said, "but my experience is that she herself has always cared most deeply about the people of Maine."
