King Learns of Anticipated Committee Assignments
12/12/2012 04:34 PM ET

If the Democratic caucus and full Senate approve, freshman U.S. Sen. Angus King of Maine will land spots on some influential committees.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ Freshman independent Sen. Angus King of Maine is close to landing spots on the Senate Armed Services, Intelligence, Budget and Rules committees.

The Democratic Steering Committee approved committee assignments Wednesday. They're subject to approval of the full Democratic caucus and the full Senate when the new Congress convenes in January.

Senate Majority leader Harry Reid said the anticipated assignments help senators "bring their unique talents and expertise to bear as we work together to advance the interests of the middle class.''

In the Senate, 53 Democrats will make up the majority. Two independents will caucus with them, including King, for an effective total of 55.
