LIVERMORE FALLS, Maine (AP) _ The select board in the community of roughly 3,500 residents voted this week to investigate the possibility of switching counties.
Resident and state Rep. L. Gary Knight (R-Livermore Falls) is sponsoring a bill to research the economic impact of a move.
He and others say a move makes financial sense. Livermore Falls is on the border between the counties and about 15 miles closer to the Franklin County seat than to the Androscoggin County seat. The town would save money transporting criminal defendants to and from jails and courts.
Of course, Franklin County has to accept Livermore Falls. Franklin County commissioners Chairman Clyde Barker said he is against the move because it would increase his county's costs.
