Postal Service Grants Maine U.S. House Reps Request
01/15/2013 4:28 PM ET

The federal agency has agreed to a request to designate seven island post offices in Maine as Part-Time Post Offices.

The U.S. Postal Service has agreed to a request from Maine U.S. House Reps. Mike Michaud and Chellie Pingree to designate seven island post offices in Maine as Part-Time Post Offices.

That designation protects the post offices from drastic service cuts, and guarantees they will stay open at least six hours a day. The Postal Service had proposed cutting the hours at island post offices to as little as two hours a day.

Generally, in order for a post office to get the Part-Time designation, it must be at least 25 miles from the nearest post office. Michaud and Pingree said that criteria should not apply to islands that are only accessible by ferry.
