Maine House OK's Concealed Weapons Confidentiality
04/23/2013 12:58 PM ET

The bill, which faces further votes, also calls for release of statistical information about concealed weapons permits.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ The Maine House has overwhelmingly approved a bill that allows personal information on concealed weapons permits to be kept confidential.

Representatives voted 106-40 Tuesday in favor of the bill, following the recommendation of the Judiciary Committee's majority.

The bill, which faces further votes, also calls for release of statistical information about concealed weapons permits.

The House rejected an amendment that would have kept permit records open except for certain protected groups, such as police officers, judges, prosecutors and those protected by court orders.

The issue comes up a week before a moratorium on the release of any concealed weapons permit information is due to expire.

The moratorium was put in place after the Bangor Daily News requested all concealed weapons permit information through the state's Freedom of Access law.
