UMaine Athletic Director Abbott to Return to Collins' Staff
09/10/2013 01:47 PM ET

Sen. Susan Collins says Steve Abbott will leave his post at the University of Maine and return to her office as chief of staff, a position he held previously for 12 years.

The University of Maine's athletic director is leaving that job to resume working for Maine U.S. Sen. Susan Collins.

Collins, a Republican, today announced that Steve Abbott, her former chief of staff who currently heads UMaine athletics, is returning to her office and will resume his previous position as chief of staff.

Abbott is an Orono native. He served as Collins' chief of staff for 12 years, from 1997 to 2009, before resigning to run for unsuccessfully for governor of Maine in the 2010 Republican primary. Abbott has been UMaine's athletic director since Sept. 2010.

Collins says her current chief of staff, Mary Dietrich, plans to retire from government service and "pursue opportunities in the private sector."
