Search for Survivors of Midair Collision, Including Maine Man, Called Off

Maj. Samuel Leigh, 35, of Belgrade, was aboard a Marine helicopter that collided with a Coast Guard plane Thursday off the coast of southern California.

Authorities have given up the search for survivors of a midair collision between an Coast Guard plane and a Marine Corp helicopter, including a Belgrade Marine who was on board the chopper.

Maj. Samuel Leigh, 35,  was aboard the helicopter that collided with a Coast Guard plane Thursday over waters off the southern California coast.  The plane was searching for a missing boater, according to the Associated Press.  Leigh's family lives in Belgrade.

Two crew members, including Leigh, were on board the helicopter, and seven were on board the Coast Guard plane.  The chopper Leigh was on had been transporting helicopters on a nighttime training exercise, according to the New York Times.

Searchers have found debris from the accident, but no sign of survivors. Authorities are now trying to recover the debris in an effort to determine what caused the accident.
