Gay Marriage Repeal Supporters Claim Victory
11/04/2009 01:09 AM ET

As of early this morning, opponents of the repeal effort were still hoping for a last-minute boost from late returns, but the Associated Press has called the race for the Yes on One side.

Opponents of gay marriage in Maine are claiming victory in their effort to overturn the law enacted earlier this year. With about 84 percent of precincts reporting, the repeal effort was leading by a margin of 53 to 47.

Mark Mutty of Stand for Marriage Maine, the group said the effort "prevailed because the people of Maine, the silent majority, the folks back home, spoke with their vote tonight. And let's be clear: What the people of Maine had to say was that marriage matters, and it is between a man and a woman."

Early this morning, those who sought to defeat the repeal had still not conceded, though the Associated Press has called the race for the Yes on One camp.
