Wells Voters Reject Water Ordinance
11/04/2009

The measure would have allowed large water extractions by companies such as Poland Spring.

Voters in Wells have rejected an ordinance that would have allowed Poland Spring Bottling Company to extract local water. The controversial ordinance went down by a vote about 2 to 1.

The Board of Selectmen decided in September to have voters weigh in on the ordinance, which would have permitted and regulated large-scale water extractions.

Mark Dubois, Natural Resources Manager for Poland Spring, says the vote will have no immediate impact.  He says the company had no plans to begin extracting water in Wells right away.

"This particular zoning issue that they were looking at revolved around a project that could have been a potential three to five years down the road," he says. "So it has no immediate bearing on us here."

Despite the vote, Dubois says Poland Spring plans to continue bottling water in Maine.
