Leaders of Maine's Legislature have decided not to consider a measure in the upcoming session that would ban mandatory vaccinations for the flu. But Rep. Doug Thomas, a Ripley Republican, believes the current law isn't clear on the issue.
"There's conflicting information being give to the people of Maine as to what our rights are when it comes to being vaccinated, and if we don't have the right to control our own bodies, what gets injected into our own bodies, what rights do we have?" Thomas told councilmembers. "There are all kinds of pood reasons why people might not want to be vaccinated."
But six Democrats on the council say Maine's law already makes it clear that flu vaccinations are voluntary. One provision allows the governor to declare an extreme health emergency in the case of a biological weapons attack, but they say that's being misinterpreted.
Thomas says he might appeal to the full legislature. And if he's reelected next year, he says he'll propose the measure again.
