Baldacci Establishing Medical Marijuana Task Force
11/06/2009 11:20 AM ET

Maine's governor says changes are needed in order for the law to be implemented.

Gov. John Baldacci says he's establishing a task force to help implement the newly-approved expansion of Maine's medical marijuana law. The expansion, approved Tuesday by voters, requires the state to set up dispensaries for distributing pot to eligible patients.

But Baldacci, along with Maine Attorney General Janet Mills, says changes are required to make the law workable. "There's licensing and regulations that need to be established, and we need to make sure that that's done," Baldacci told Capitol News Service. He says the commissioner of Maine's Department of Health and Human Services will oversee the task force.

Attorney General Mills says many of the measure's provisions are overly broad, and lack oversight. Jonathan Leavitt, one of the leaders of the group that put the question on the ballot, says he plans to work with the task force to tweak the law if needed, but he says he'll oppose any changes that might undermine the measure's intent to make pot more accessible for patients.
