| Fox Islands Wind is set to throw the switch tomorrow on three turbines on Vinalhaven Island. |

Vinalhaven Island residents will soon be getting their energy from a clean, renewable source: windmills. Three wind turbines that were recently constructed on the island are set to go online tomorrow.
Fox Islands Wind will officially throw the switch on the turbines in an island ceremony tomorrow. Islanders currently get their power from an underwater cable connected to the mainland, but prices are high -- roughly twice the state average, according to the Portland Press Herald.
The project is expected to generate 1.5 megawatts of electricity, enough for the 2,000 residents of Vinalhaven and nearby North Haven Island. While many residents are applauding the project in hopes that it will lower electricity costs, others are concerned about the noise and the appearance of the 250-foot tall turbines, the paper reports.
