State budget cuts are hitting Maine's courts hard. Maine's Chief Justice Leigh Saufley says the state's courts are preparing plans to limit access in order to deal with the cutbacks. But Saufley says she believes the courts will still be able to meet their constitutional requirements.
"I feel very confident that the governor understands how important that is," Saufley told Capitol News Service. "I know working with legislative leadership in Maine that they understand how important that is, and I expect that those issues of liberty and trust will continue to be the highest priority for all of the various branches of government."
Saufley says courthouses across the state will be open fewer days a week and fewer court sessions will be held. And she says technological improvements are also planned that will help cut costs across the entire criminal justice system.
