Woodsman Alert for Chestnut Trees

Until the last century, American chestnut trees were the dominant hardwoods in much of the eastern forest. Then they were killed off by a blight introduced from Asia. Although there's a concerted effort to develop a blight-resistant hybrid strain of chestnut trees, savvy woodsmen occasionally find remnant chestnuts, some quite large, in forests around Maine.
