Harpswell Fisherman Dies After Falling Off Boat
12/31/2009 11:14 AM ET

The incident occurred early this morning shortly after the lobster boat left the dock to haul fishing gear.

A Harpswell lobsterman has died after falling off a boat early this morning. The Maine Marine Patrol says Christopher Hanna, 27, of Bath was working on a lobster boat captained by Mark Merrill of Brunswick when he ended up in the water.

Authorities say the Emily & Logan had just left the dock to haul fishing gear when Merrill noticed that Hanna, who was working as a stern man, was missing.

Merrill spotted Hanna floating unconscious in the water a short distance away, and radioed for help. A nearby fisherman responded and helped pull Hanna back on board. The fisherman began performing CPR as the boat returned to the dock.  Hanna was then taken to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, where he was pronounced dead.

The incident is under investigation by the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office and the Maine Marine Patrol.
