| Ron Huber of Rockland, who describes himself as a "conservation activist," says the state has not adequately researched the effects of a proposed wind power testing site off Monhegan Island. |

An environmental activist is asking a court to temporarily suspend the state's decision to designate an area near Monhegan Island as a testing center for wind power technology.
Rockland resident Ron Huber says the state acted prematurely. "Why is the Department of Conservation rushing so blindly forward on authorizing the state's ocean wind energy research center off Monhegan?" Huber says in a statement.? "Do it right!?The wind's not going anywhere."
Huber says the state hasn't adequately researched the effects of the proposed testing center on the island's bird population, or on the surrounding fishing grounds.
Gov. John Baldacci announced last month that three coastal sites had been chosen for wind-power testing, including Boon Island off York, Damariscove Island south of Boothbay Harbor and Monhegan Island.
The Monhegan Island site will be used by the University of Maine to test composite materials for turbines, and other wind-power technology.
