01/26/2010 04:19 PM ET

Conservationist Roxanne Quimby has bought large tracts of woodland in five townships between Greenville and Brownville, according to the Bangor Daily News.

Conservationist Roxanne Quimby has purchased several thousand acres of land in Piscataquis County. The acquisitions are part of Quimby's efforts to preserve land under her land trust, Elliotsville Plantation Inc., according to the Bangor Daily News.

Quimby has purchased land in five Maine townships: Williamsburg and Elliotsville Townships; Township 7 Range 9 NWP; Township 6 Range 9 NWP; and Barnard Township, all located in Piscataquis County between Greenville and Brownville, the paper reports.

Information was not available about how many acres Quimby bought or how much she paid for them. The paper says its attempts to contact Quimby were unsuccessful.

State officials say they're working with Quimby to keep the state's primary snowmobile trail between Greenville and Brownville open, the paper reports. Quimby is the founder of Burt's Bees, a line of natural personal care products. About six years ago, she sold much of the company, providing her with resources to buy up thousands of acres of Maine woodland.
