Maine City Wins Environmental Designation
09/17/2009 11:37 AM ET

Maine's capital city has been named one of the nation's top "water wise" communities by a national environmental organization.

American Rivers says Augusta was chosen for the distinction by what the organization says is the improvement of the health of the Kennebec River following the removal of the Edward's Dam ten years ago.

Rebecca Wodder, president of American Rivers, says, "We are at a tranformational moment for our nation's rivers and water infrastructure, and Augusta is forging the path to a healthier, more secure future."

The organization credits removal of the Edward's Dam with allowing fish stocks to increase, creating new recreational opportunities, boosting the local economy and improving the quality of life in Augusta.
