Nation Unprepared for Biological Weapons Attack, Collins Says
10/28/2009 11:32 AM ET

Collins says more progress is needed to avert such an attack.

Maine Sen. Susan Collins says the Obama Administration is not doing a good job of preparing the nation for a biological weapons attack by terrorists. Collins says the Commission on Weapons of Mass Destruction found that efforts to prepare the nation for a terrorist attack with weapons such as anthrax and fatal viruses are inadequate.

"The WMD Commission has projected that unless significant progress is made, it is more likely than not that the world will see a biological weapon used in a terrorist attack sometime within the next five years," Collins told Capitol News Service.

Collins says efforts over the last several years to develop emergency response capacity are a good start, but she says they don't address the specific issue of biological weapons. She says a number of bills, including some she has introduced, are pending that would improve the nation's readiness for such an attack.
