Swine Flu Claims Two More Maine Lives
11/23/2009 03:37 PM ET

The two victims who died over the weekend had "severe underlying conditions," state health officials say.

Two more Maine residents have died after contracting swine flu, bringing the total number of deaths in the state to seven. The latest victims, who died over the weekend, include a Penobscot County resident over the age of 65, and a Washington County resident between 25 and 65 years of age. Both people had "severe underlying conditions," state officials say, but they're not releasing other details.

Maine Center for Disease Control Director Dr. Dora Anne Mills says most people who contract H1N1 end up with relatively mild cases and recover with no lasting effects. But she says the swine flu can be severe, especially in those with underlying conditions, pregnant women and children.

All seven people in Maine who died after contracting the disease had underlying conditions. Previous deaths include a York County man in his 50s, a young adult from Penobscot County, two adults between the ages of 25 and 50 -- one from Penobscot County and one from Hancock County -- and an adult over the age of 65 from Kennebec County.

Mills says dozens of people have been hospitalized with the disease and outbreaks have occurred in more than 150 Maine schools. In a normal flu season, she says, fewer than a half-dozen schools suffer outbreaks, but about 150 people die after contracting the flu.
