Bangor Protest Marks Ten Year Anniversary Of "Battle In Seattle"
11/30/2009 04:17 PM ET

Fair Trade Activists Convene To Criticize WTO

As the World Trade Organization began its conference in Geneva, a crowd of about 25 people gathered in Bangor to demonstrate their belief that even freer trade could worsen global inequality. The demostration comes a decade since the so-called Battle in Seattle, and the WTO still faces harsh criticism from fair trade activists.

The Maine Fair Trade Campaign joined labor, environment, small farm, and pro-democracy activists in Bangor, to call for an end to the World Trade Organization just as it begins a major conference in Geneva.

The Bangor crowd marched from West Market Square to the offices of Congressman Mike Michaud and Senator Olympia Snowe, encouraging them to stand in favor of trade policy reform to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA model.?
