Hidden History: 19th Century Mainers Witnessed Meteorite Strikes
02/20/2013   Reported By: Tom Porter

The explosion of a meteorite in the sky over Russia last week injured over a thousand people - many from shattered glass - set off car alarms and disrupted cell phone networks. It also made for some pretty scary and dramatic footage, like this clip, posted on YouTube. Luckily for us earth-dwellers, such events are very rare. But if you had been living in Maine in the 19th century, you might have thought otherwise. On four separate occasions, each roughly 25 years apart, witnesses saw meteorites come crashing to the ground in different parts of the Pine Tree State. As part of our ongoing series on Maine's Hidden History, local historian Herb Adams explains.
