Dinner With the Smileys Published as a Book
05/07/2013   Reported By: Tom Porter

Sarah Smiley is a Bangor-based author, columnist and Navy wife. When her pilot husband Dustin was deployed to Africa for a year 18 months ago, one of the things that she and her three young boys, ages 11, 9 and 5, thought they would miss the most would be family dinners.

This was a time when the family would sit down and talk to each other with no cell phones, videogames or other distractions, and it was also a time when Dustin's absence would be most keenly felt. So, during his absence Sarah decided to invite different guests to dinner every week to fill the empty chair at the table. Doing this, she said, taught her some important and valuable lessons about love, life and loss.

Tom Porter spoke with Sarah Smiley [transcript not available] after her book was published by Hyperion Books.

Sarah Smiley will be doing a book-signing this coming Saturday, May 11, at the Briar Patch bookstore in Bangor at 11am.
