Give an Hour: Donating Time to Help Heal the Mental Scars of Battle
08/19/2013   Reported By: Tom Porter

Of the 2.6 million or so Americans who have served in recent conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, up to a third of them are estimated to be suffering some form of mental trauma. In Maine, with its high percentage of veterans in the population, that would equate to about 50,000 people who bear mental scars due to military service. In 2005, clinical psychologist Barbara Van Dahlen decided to dedicate her life to trying to heal those scars, and set up Given An Hour - a non-profit offering free mental health counseling to veterans. Last year she was named one of Time's 100 most influential people. In an interview with Maine Things Considered host Tom Porter, Van Dahlen says a number of factors inspired her to focus on helping veterans - including growing up with one.
