Maine Author Tells Story of Early U.S. Navy
10/16/2013   Reported By: Irwin Gratz

Two hundred years ago this month, U.S. Navy Capt. David Porter was on an Island in the Pacific Ocean. Porter and his warship "Essex" had wreaked havoc on British whaling and commercial ships, providing badly-needed success in the first year of the War of 1812. Porter's voyage is the subject of Portlander George Daughan's third book about the early U.S. Navy, "The Shining Sea." MPBN Morning Edition host Irwin Gratz talks with Daughan.

The Shining Sea

As I mentioned to Daughan, the streets of my old neighborhood in the Bronx bear the names of early American naval heroes, like Bainbridge, and Decatur, and Hull - but not Porter.

Portland author George Daughan's new book, "The Shining Sea," is published by Basic Books.
