Maine Searching For Ways To Create More 'Affordable' Housing
10/28/2013   Reported By: Irwin Gratz

The demand for so-called "affordable housing" continues to far outstretch the supply. Greg Payne of the Maine Affordable Housing Coalition says, "We're going to have about 7,000 people come to us this year, like we did last year, needing an affordable home. And we're only going to be able to help about 450 of them." The coalition and the Maine State Housing Authority host a conference Wednesday, Oct. 30, in Portland on the issue. MPBN's Irwin Gratz talks with Greg Payne and John Gallagher, director of the Maine State Housing Authority. Gallagher says the rebound in home constructon could raise the costs to build affordable housing units.
