A Cumberland County corrections officer has been arrested on charges of trafficking in prison contraband. Toby M. Post, 38, of West Gardiner was arrested this afternoon on jail property by sheriff's detectives and Maine drug enforcement agents.

Cumberland County Sheriff's Department officials allege that Post was a middleman in a scheme to deliver drugs to a jail inmate. Investigators say they observed Post taking control of a cache of drugs and he was arrested when he tried to bring the drugs into the jail.

Post, who's been an employee of Cumberland County Sheriff's Department since 2004, has been placed on paid administrative leave, pending the conclusion of an internal investigation. A criminal investigation has also been launched to identify any others who might have been involved in the scheme.

Post is out on bail, and an initial court appearance has been scheduled for March 10.
