Spc. Wade A. Slack, 21, died yesterday while serving in the Wardak Province, Gov. John Baldacci says.

A soldier from Waterville has died in Afghanistan. Gov. John Baldacci says Spc. Wade A. Slack, a Waterville High graduate, died yesterday while serving in the Wardak Province with the U.S. Army's 707th Ordnance battalion from Fort Lewis, Washington.

Baldacci says he spoke today with Spc. Slack's mother and father, who live in Waterville. "He loved his family and he loved his country," Baldacci says in a statement. "He was a dedicated soldier who served his country with honor. All of Maine mourns his passing."

Gov. Baldacci will order flags lowered to half-staff on the day of Spc. Slack's funeral.
