UPDATE: Maine Report of Woman Carrying Fetus in Bag Probed
03/04/2013 01:51 PM ET

Bangor police say a woman walking in downtown Bangor was carrying a grocery bag holding what appeared to be a fetus in a sealed plastic container.

BANGOR, Maine (AP) _ Authorities in Maine are investigating whether a woman was carrying a fetus in a bag as she walked in downtown Bangor.

Sgt. Paul Edwards says police confronted the woman Friday afternoon after getting a call that she had a fetus. He says what appeared to be a fetus was inside a sealed plastic container the woman was carrying in a plastic grocery bag.

The state medical examiner was investigating the find Monday to determine whether it was indeed a fetus. Edwards says if it is, he hopes it will tell how old it is, whether it came from a miscarriage or an abortion, and who the mother is.

The woman was interviewed and released. No one was arrested, and no charges have been filed.
