Maine Governor Proposes $6.3 Billion Budget
01/11/2013 3:25 PM ET

Maine Gov. Paul LePage said his two-year budget proposal includes some education cuts, but that general purpose aid would remain higher than it was when he took office.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ Finance Commissioner Sawin Millet began briefing lawmakers Friday afternoon on the $6.3 billion budget for the two years beginning on July 1. The proposal would eliminate 200 jobs.

In a statement, LePage called it "an opportunity to redesign programs and right-size government."

The two-year budget addresses a projected shortfall approaching $130 million. Lawmakers will also need to find tens of millions of dollars more to cover cost overruns for social services.
