WZON-AM says Tim Whitehead, UMaine's head hockey coach, was let go following a disappointing season.

ORONO, Maine (AP) _ The University of Maine has fired head hockey coach Tim Whitehead after 12 years on the job.

WZON-AM says Whitehead was let go following a disappointing season during which the team went 11-19-8 before losing in the first round of the Hockey East playoffs.

Whitehead came to Maine from Massachusetts-Lowell in 2001 to replace Shawn Walsh after Walsh died of cancer.

While at Maine, Whitehead had a record of 250-171-54. He took the team to four Frozen Four appearances and two showings in national championship games in his first six years, but he had a losing record over his last six years.

The university gave Whitehead a three-year contract extension in 2010. The school will pay him the $190,000 he is owed for the final year on his contract.
