Maine's Sunday River Resort Plans $5.7 Million in Upgrades

Sunday River spokesperson Darcy Morse says among the enhancements will be 200 new energy-efficient snow guns that pump a lot more water using much less energy.

The Sunday River ski resort in western Maine has announced plans to spend $5.7 million on upgrades that are expected to be completed for the 2013 - 2014 season.

Sunday River spokesperson Darcy Morse says among the enhancements will be 200 new energy-efficient snow guns that pump a lot more water using much less energy.

"We started this process back in 2010, where we would take the newer, more energy-efficient equipment and replace some of our older equipment with it," Morse says. Morse says some of the new guns will be put in areas that don't currently have snow-making equipment.

Other projects announced today include a 15-acre trail featuring a so-called Superpipe, jumps and rails designed to let skiers and snowboarders do tricks and go airborne. Resort officials say they're also planning to add an outdoor wedding venue, upgrade lodging and do some roadwork.
