Bitter Cold Shuts Down Maine-N.H. Bridge
01/23/2013 03:57 PM ET

Officials say the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge was being raised early this afternooon to let marine traffic through when it became stuck a few feet up in the open position.

A bridge that carries traffic across the Piscataqua River between Maine and New Hampshire is stuck open, possibly as a result of the bitter cold.

Maine Department of Transportation officials say the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge, which crosses the river on the Route 1 Bypass, was being raised early this afternooon to let marine traffic through when it became stuck a few feet up in the open position.

Officials say repairs are underway, but the bridge is likely to be closed to traffic through the evening commute. The Memorial Bridge, which crosses the river on Route 1, is already closed for major repairs. Officials say motorists can still cross the river on the Interstate-95 bridge.
