Political Parties Look for Early Voting in Maine
09/28/2012 12:30 PM ET

Election Day is more than a month away, but many Mainers will be marking their ballots before then.

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) _ The state's political parties are encouraging voters to apply for absentee ballots and vote early.

The Democratic Party says phone calls to potential voters are being made from field offices. A robo call voiced by former Democratic Sen. George Mitchell reminds listeners that Maine law does not require voters to give any special reason for voting absentee.

Republicans say their local candidates are getting the word to voters, and there's a mailing program targeting people who've voted absentee and those who might lean Republican.

Absentee ballots will become available in municipal offices by Oct. 5. Voters have until Nov. 1, five days before the election, to request them.
