Pianist Kenny Drew (senior) will be tonight's feature, with the particular focus on his fine 1960 UNDERCURRENT set for Blue Note with a quintet which included trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley.

In 1954 underrecorded trumpeter Tony Fruscella and saxophonist Brew Moore cut a fine little album for Atlantic Records, which never issued it. It's now available on a Spanish CD. Some of it will be heard this evening, along with a track or two of Fruscella with Stan Getz.

Bassist-composer-singer Esperanza Spalding's RADIO MUSIC SOCIETY has recently arrived. The emphasis is on the singing, which we'll sample tonight.

Trumpeter Cal Massey was also an important but short-lived composer whose work attracted the likes of John Coltrane, Lee Morgan and Archie Shepp. Tonight we'll hear some of their performances of his music, but the focus will be on Massey's own Blues for Coltrane session for Candid.

The ambitiously-titled The Music of America, which covers a 13-year span of Wynton Marsalis' career with Sony/Columbia, was released recently, and consists of highlights from some of the trumpeter-composer's major works, including Blood on the Fields and All Rise.  We heard highlights of the highlights.

The last several months have yielded a spate of interesting releases by big bands. The focus is on three of them: the Westchester Jazz Orchestra, whose Maiden Voyage Suite was inspired by Herbie Hancock's Maiden Voyage; the H2 Big Band's You're It, with trumpeter-fluegelhornist Bobby Shew as featured guest; and Jimmy Owens' The Monk Project, which further explores the music of Thelonious Monk.
