First it was the collapse of investment banks, then mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Now retailers are going under as credit dries up and consumers, worried about their shrinking equity and retirement funds, keep their wallets shut. Meanwhile, the big three automakers are lining up for help from the federal government, while state governments struggle with mounting red ink. What next?
That’s one of the many questions we explored Wednesday, November 19th during a special call-in and conversation on the financial crisis, hosted by MPBN's Barbara Cariddi. On hand to answer questions were two of the states top economic experts: Charles Colgan, Muskie School professor and former State Economist, who’s well known for his much-publicized state economic forecasts; and John Mahon, Dean of the University of Maine’s College of Business, Public Policy and Health, who’s written extensively about economic issues in numerous publications.
