Dr. Bernard Lown

One of the great intellects to ever to come out of Maine is Nobel laureate Dr. Bernard Lown.

Dr. Lown graduated from the University of Maine in 1942 after moving to the state as a child from his native Lithuania with his family shortly before the outbreak of World War II. A co-founder of both Physicians for Social Responsibility and later International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, where his work earned him the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize, Dr. Lown is currently serving as Professor of Cardiology Emeritus at Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Lown tells host Frank Ferrel there’s a direct link between the practice of medicine and advocating for peace and social justice.
