Documents Detail Maine Turnpike Head's Expenses

Former Turnpike Authority Executive Director Paul Violette is scheduled to appear before a legislative committee on Friday.

AUGUSTA (AP) _ Documents obtained by the Legislature's finance oversight office show details of how more than $200,000 in expenses were billed to the Maine Turnpike between 2005 and 2009.

Maine Today Media newspapers says that expense reports by former Executive Director Paul Violette are included in documents in the Office of Program Evaluation and Government Accountability.

The documents show that Violette billed his agency $200,000 from 2005 to 2009 for hotels, meals and other expenses, the paper reports.

Violette is scheduled to appear before the Legislature's Government Oversight Committee on Friday. His attorney, Peter DeTroy, says Violette will probably invoke his constitutional right against self-incrimination and decline to answer questions.

Documents were collected by the government accountability office as it reviewed turnpike finances last year. In some cases, the description of Violette's expenses is vague, listing only the date, location and amount. In others, only Violette is identified.
