The Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts is an international school headquartered in Portland, Maine. George Smith founded the school in 2006 and continues as its president where artists study art theory, aesthetics and a range of discourses in pursuit of a Ph.D. in the visual arts.

IDSVA is headquartered in Portland, Maine, but the program is realized in a number of different locations including Harlem/New York, Venice, and Paris.
