George Bellows

Bellows’ art and personality matched the tenor of his time, touching on many of the most important social and political issues and mass spectacles of the day.

The paintings, drawings, and lithographs featured in the exhibition represent a cross section of iconic images of the modern city (boxing matches, New York street life) as well as less familiar subjects (Maine seascapes, landscapes, WWI, and family portraits). In a career cut short by death at the age of 42, George Bellows left over a thousand paintings, drawings and prints—a daring and original record of America in the early 20th century.

George Bellows was produced by The National Gallery of Art, Washington
