Maine's Food Economy/Your Vote 2010 - Peter Mills
March 11, 2010
Peter Mils

Maine’s food industry is a point of pride for the state as they rake in national awards, but they’re also much more – a major part of the economy, worth nearly $2 billion a year. Jennifer talks with food writer Meredith Goad and chef Sam Hayward about this phenomenon. Also, Your Vote 2010 political coverage continues when Jennifer sits down with Republican Gubernatorial candidate Peter Mills.

Bon Appetit magazine recently named Portland “America’s Foodiest Small Town”… the New York Times last fall published a feature about Maine’s restaurant scene that – for several days – was its most-emailed article. And again this year, a number of Maine chefs and restaurants have been nominated for prestigious James Beard awards. In short, Maine’s food scene is becoming what we’re “known for.”

Jennifer Rooks is joined in the studio for a panel discussion on Maine's burgeoning “foodie economy” by Sam Hayward, chef and owner of Fore Street restaurant. Hayward has been called “Portland’s Food Hero” and the “Godfather” of the food scene here. Plus, Meredith Goad, food writer for the Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram participates in the lively discussion about Maine food.

Jennifer Rooks chats with the Republican gubernatorial candidate Peter Mills. He has more legislative experience than his Republican gubernatorial opponents having served in the Maine Legislature since 1994. He is also the only Republican candidate, so far, to have run for governor previously; losing the primary in 2006 to fellow State Senator Chandler Woodcock of Farmington. The 2006 race was close, Woodcock won the primary by only 3.4 percentage points. The discussion is a part of MPBN’s Your Vote 2010 coverage ahead of the June primary elections.
