Maine Sen. Susan Collins says she was as surprised as anyone when she learned that her Maine colleague, Olympia Snowe, was stepping down.

In an interview today with MPBN's Susan Sharon, Collins says Snowe called her yesterday afternoon to break the news of her departure, which landed like a bombshell on Maine's political landscape.

Collins says, as far as she knew, Snowe was continuing to run a vigorous re-election campaign. She says she and former Maine Sen. Bill Cohen were in the midst of planning a fundraiser next week for Snowe.

Collins says Snowe has expressed frustration in the past few weeks about the sharply partisan tone in Washington. She says Snowe's departure leaves a void in the U.S. Senate, particularly among the shrinking ranks of moderates.
