Baldacci Urges No Vote on Question 1
10/27/2009 02:33 PM ET

Baldacci says he once preferred civil unions, but says he now supports same-sex marriage.

Gov. John Baldacci today spoke out in opposition to repealing Maine's new gay marriage law. The governor, who signed the law earlier this year authorizing same-sex marriage in Maine, made the remarks at a No on One campaign event this morning in Bangor.

Baldacci acknowledged that he was once opposed to gay marriage and instead supported civil unions. But he said after researching the issue, he now thinks that civil unions are not equal to marriage.

Gay marriage opponents collected enough signatures to mount a people's veto of the new law. Voters will determine the fate of the new law when they go to the polls on Tuesday.
