John Bisbee
Untitled Metal Spike Sculpture

Donated by: John Bisbee
Location:Brunswick
Value: $1500
Description:
The last location this wonderful sculpture was displayed was on a wall at the Portland Museum of Art, in the highly attended and acclaimed retrospective from January through March, 2008 of the art of John Bisbee of Brunswick, metal sculptor, photographer of the creative process, and lecturer at Bowdoin College. This work, untitled, is crafted from the signature metal spikes Bisbee uses in his sculptures. Twelve shafts of metal are, in this case, forged, flattened and welded into twelve sinuous limbs which could easily grace the arms or legs of an octopus or spider, so graceful are they as they radiate from their central joint. The sculpture is 36 by 45 inches. As fine artists transform common lives and themes into universal truths, sculptor Bisbee respects the practical origins of the common spikes but transmutes them into objects of surpassing grace. John Bisbee has been awarded several major prizes, including the Rappaport Prize at the DeCordovaMuseum and the Jurors’ Prize from the Portland Museum of Art Biennial.
