The Ellsworth American newspaper created “The Greatest Generation” series in 2004 in order to capture, before it was too late, the stories of the men and women of Hancock and Washington counties who fought in World War II.  This ongoing series is published in the pages of The Ellsworth American each week with a new profile edited by The Ellsworth American Managing Editor Stephen Fay. 

Each Veterans Day The Ellsworth American produces a separate “The Greatest Generation” compilation of the 52 profiles featured in the paper during the year.  The compilation is printed as an insert in both The Ellsworth American and Mount Desert Islander newspapers.  Two inserts consisting of 52 profiles have been published and for information on obtaining copies please e-mail or call 207-667-2576. Stephen Fay and The Ellsworth American team are currently working on their third “The Greatest Generation” compilation.
