Frontier Wars 1675 - 1759 : Raid on Pemaquid - John Gyles captured
Raid on Pemaquid - John Gyles captured
In August of 1689, a young English boy named John Gyles is abducted by Wabanaki warriors during a raid on Pemaquid.
He spends at least six years with his captors learning their language and customs. They ransom him to French settlers in
Acadia, where he learns to speak French as well. Finally, he is returned to the English in Boston and spends the rest of
his life working as a trusted negotiator between the Wabanaki and the English.
