"The Nation's Playground": Technology and Tourism
A hundred years ago, the railroad was one of the
world's latest technological innovations. Maine tourism grew,
thanks to the presence of a widespread railroad network throughout
the state. Then, the automobile came along and changed the nature
of Maine tourism again. Today, we have the Internet. How might
this technological innovation affect Maine's tourist industry
in the long run? Follow the instructions below to help you answer
A. Visit 2-3 of the following Maine tourism web sites.
B. Using a separate sheet of paper, list the features
of each site you visit. What does the site have to offer? Make
sure your list is thorough.
C. How do these web sites differ from advertisements
in books, newspapers, or magazines? For each site, write a short
statement that identifies what you think distinguishes it from
a non-Internet source.
D. Now, find a new Maine tourism web site of your
own. Write a brief review (about a paragraph long) of this site.
What does it do well? What needs improvement?
