The great Haitian born artist and naturalist John James Audubon (1785 - 1851) displayed our nation's fauna to the world through his paintings and colorful prints including The Birds of America (1827 - 1838). In his travels, Audubon worked in Maine visiting Bangor and points down east in 1832 and Eastport in 1833. According to Maine historian Herbert Adams, Audubon painted 14 Maine birds from the Bufflehead Duck to the Great Black Backed Gull and Boreal Owl.
